Who We Are

Harry Blackstone Sr. was of a great era in magic. His signature piece was the
Floating Light Bulb which, alit, would defy gravity. It would even levitate out above the audience.
My Grandmother took me to see his show in 1944 and, at only eight years old, I,
Charlie Fenn, was hooked.
I am still trying to do the floating light bulb that well. As a youth I was fortunate enough to see other greats, as well. I caught Dante's performance at the Palace Theater in Cleveland, Ohio, between the feature and the newsreel. I shall never forget the opening of 15 or 20 silk curtains (one at a time) in different colors.
What an opening!
I spent time watching Professor John Isaly demonstrate his magic sets at
a local department store, and got the large set for Christmas in 1944. I was performing on stage the nest year at age nine. (Actually, my real stage debut came at age 3, and by that fateful age 9 I was
also singing on the "Barn Dance Jamboree" on radio from the Cleveland Masonic Auditorium.)
I began taking magic lessons and studying with Professor Isaly for a couple of years and spent all my spare time at Snyder's Magic Shop in downtown Cleveland. He never let the kids near the back counter where he sold "special pictures". I started working the local television shows in the late forties and put myself through college performing magic and singing. We did a Homer and Jethro act in those days! I started doing school and church shows at $25 an hour, which was huge money in 1950.
That makes 2003 my 59th year in magic.
I had created and for 30 years performed the Ultimate Card in Orange. In 1999, it led me into the business side of the Art. (This was the only effect I had ever performed where people offered money to learn the secret.) An advertisement in
Magic Magazine paid for itself with some profit left over (a very good start). Then I secured the rights to
The Original Five Rope Repeat (Hen Fetsch) and still manufacture and sell both effects. (Of course, these items have been handled by Abbott's, Tannen's, Hocus Pocus, and countless other dealers. )
Thus enthused, I spent over a year researching and getting ready to come out with
The Table The World Awaited. At its first showing at Magic on the Beach
Convention (2000) the first customers were Jason Byrne and Jade. Since
then hundreds have been sold. My tables have been used by Aldo Colombini, Ed Alonzo and countless others.
John Calvert is, without a doubt, one of the true gentlemen in our profession. He took a custom table for his
Dancing Hank and, in his timeless genius, then re-designed it to his specs and in absolute perfection. These tables are now sold by many of the top magic dealers in the country and are, quite honestly, the most versatile, adaptable roll on tables available. And they are still affordable!
