Magic with Special Effects

Some things should be intuitively (and often are legally) obvious... such as not using pyrotechnics in a confined space and/or near flammable materials.  Within those simple bounds, sparks and flames and smoke always draw oohs and ahs.  They are not that difficult, and they are often surprisingly affordable, too.

One area that is filled with possibilities is your lighting.  How many times have you found yourself performing in the corner of a meeting hall.  Nothing above you but some recessed lights?  Nothing around you but windowless walls?  Have someone hold up a book, walk away and look back.  If you can't read the book's title or comprehend the artwork, then you're in trouble come showtime.

Of course, lighting is the answer.  There are easy approaches, too.  Portable stands, rugged housed lighting, and so on.  Do you know where the electrical outlets are?  Can you reach them?  Can you tape down cords (or place a carpet runner over them) so that no one will trip?

Maintaining lighting is relatively easy.  Disconnect the power supply before changing bulbs. Glass bulbs are both hot and fragile.  Do you wear glasses when working with the lighting gear?  Here's a useful hint -- keep a clean, dry cloth to help you with bulb changes -- especially quartz lights, which can be destroyed by the oils in a fingerprint.  And, of course, position and use lighting as you would pyrotechnics, described above.

Easy stuff!
